In its most basic depiction, risk assessment is a thorough look at a workplace to identify items, processes and scenarios that may cause harm. Thus the main aim of occupational risk assessment is to protect workers' health and safety.
Since risk assessment helps organizations to minimize the possibility of harm to either workers or the environment due to work-related activities, it assists in maintaining competitive and productive businesses.

- the hierarchy of measure to be taken to prevent an accident
- the obligations of the employer in relation to health and safety at work
- the importance of communicating preventative measures to workers
