EOSH Module 27
A joint health and safety committee is a forum for putting the internal responsibility system into practice. The primary purpose of the committee is to facilitate communication on health and safety issues.
An effective committee will help reduce losses associated with accidents and occupational illness. Another significant benefit is the enhancement of cooperation between all parts of the workforce in solving health and safety problems.
MODULE OBJECTIVES
After completing this module, participants will be aware of:
- the benefits of consultation and communication between employer and worker
- the setting up process, and requirements in terms of members' appointment and election
- the distinguishing of HSC and health and safety representatives (HSRs)
- the main requirements regarding the structure, size and composition of the committee
- the governance procedures of the committee
- the main functions of the committee, and the rights and duties of members
- the requirements in terms of committee meetings and communications
- the requirements in terms of health and safety education and training and its importance
- examples of good practice in health and safety committee activities and their practical results
