Ergonomics
EOSH Module 19
Employers are responsible for providing a safe and healthy workplace for their workers. In the workplace, the number and severity of Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSDs) resulting from physical overexertion, and their associated costs, can be substantially reduced by applying ergonomic principles.
Ergonomics, also called 'human factors' in some industries, is a science concerned with the 'fit' between people and their work. It puts people first, taking account of their capabilities and limitations.Ergonomics aims to ensure that tasks, equipment, information and the environment fit each other.
Implementing an ergonomic process is effective in reducing the risk of developing MSDs in high risk industries as diverse as construction, food processing, fire-fighting, office jobs, health care, transportation and warehousing.
This Ergonomics Module helps explain how applying ergonomics can improve health and safety in your workplace.
